8:21p Looking for a costume designer for a musical in SF
Hi there! I just joined, hoping someone in this community might be able to help me out. I'm directing a musical in San Francisco, and my vision for the production is that it takes place in a steampunk-esque world - it's a fantasy adventure story about a troupe of traveling actors in a time of war - the given time period on the script is "five years after 'Once Upon A Time'", so it's like this blending of a fairy tale world into industry.
That all said, I am in search of a costume designer for this project - it's a paid job, with a materials budget. Experiencing doing costuming for theatre is a plus, but what I'm really looking for is someone who can use creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to bring this world to life through the costumes.
If I've piqued anyone's interested, feel free to e-mail me at reynaldilolong@gmail.com or comment here with your e-mail. Feel free to pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested as well... thank you!

5:58p My life is pretty dull yet also highly stressful
I have been studying all this week, and will be studying all next week for my two exams on Thursday and Friday. I am really, really hoping that Melbourne will cool down to a REASONABLE temperature before then. I will settle for the 30 degree mark or just below it.
I do have thirteenthgrace's birthday tomorrow night though, which should be fun. No idea what I'll be wearing yet, but considering the nature of my wardrobe I think I'll be spoilt for choice.
no_pancakes is awesome. I mean all my flist is, but he has been appointed Chairman of Awesome for the week.
Back to work.

9:07p *annoyed growl of frustration*
godfuckingdamnit. today was a wash from the moment i got home:
the ants are (a) not on fire and (b) not dead, although they are definitely meandering about sickly. (c) my apartment smells like paint for no fathomable reason. (d) a very large orb weaver has put a web across my laundry room door, which means i have nothing to wear for tomorrow. (e) or friday. (f) or saturday, at which point i will bicycle all my shit to the laundromat, rather than attempt to battle with this (ok, it's not that big, fuck off).
(g) i wanna cookie!

10:03p Inhale Corsets?
Hello, ladies & gents! I'm looking for a corset to complete a steampunk ensemble and of course I'm torn between saving up for a nice custom one and getting one nownownow. ;) I just saw that Inhale Corsets is having a sale this month (which means I have just enough cash for an underbust Victorian), but I've been burned recently by a cheap corset seller and now I'm nervous to try someone new. I haven't seen them mentioned here before; anybody know anything about them?
Alternatively, I get a good feeling from Sidney Eileen's website. I like how open she is to customization (I have some specific ideas and I really like the idea of a one-of-a-kind piece), but I think one of hers would run me more like $275. Still, that's not too dear and it might be worth it to wait. Any thoughts?
Finally, just a word of warning: the corset seller that burned me was Alter Ego Erotics on eBay. I've seen them recommended several times here, and maybe they're just going through a bad time right now, but it's been over two months since I paid and I have never received the corset (missed Halloween! I was heartbroken), nor have they responded to multiple requests for a refund. I feel like I just threw away $100 and wasted two months of my life. :(

7:04p Rings (and an intro post, but who cares about that?)
(First post to a comm....I'm always so nervous, for whatever reason...)
So. Hello! I’m a metalsmith/jeweler who’s loved the steampunk aesthetic ever since I first saw it, but I’ve never really been “active in the community,” as it may be. But seeing as how I just recently began to make jewelry with steampunk specifically in mind, and unfortunately have no one in Real Life to really share it with, I thought I’d change that—and thus I came across this lovely comm.! And lurked for a considerable amount of time, as I am wont to do.
Anyway. To the important stuff.
Ring; sterling silver and brass.

( More. )
I’m considering setting up shop at cons, but basically wanted to get a feel for what other fellow steampunks think about my work (meager as it is, at the moment). So any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Last but not least, pleased to meet you all, and I’m very happy to be here!
PS: If, by some miracle, you’re interested, the rings posted are for sale. (And since most people don’t have $20,000 lying around to buy, say, a pen a pair of earrings, I do try to keep my prices relatively reasonable for the average person.) Feel free to ask for any details. ^_^

3:56p Confused as to why I wear various German WWII (OMG Nazi!) uniforms sometimes? Here's some clarity...
I originally posted this in Facebook, but I should also share this here. I've made this a somewhat permanent post at the top of my journal so it won't get missed by newcomers:
It was recently brought to my attention by a friend that perhaps some people who see photos of me in various modes of WWII German dress may be confused and even offended. I don't feel as though I should have to apologize, however; I need to make a few points very clear. Even posting any sort of disclaimer should never be needed, but I'm someone who likes to have her bases covered. I imagine some may even take it upon themselves to make assumptions about me and my general character, based on these images, instead of just asking me about them. These individuals may even start spreading lies and rumors in an attempt to stir up drama, of which I want no part. So, for those of you who are either new friends or old here, and are curious as to why I have photos on LJ, Facebook and elsewhere of me wearing said uniforms, here's a nice serving of clarification: ( Please read on... )

2:21p A reminder of the sacrifices made
Lack of health care killed 2,266 veterans last year.
WASHINGTON - The number of US veterans who died in 2008 because they lacked health insurance was 14 times higher than the US military death toll in Afghanistan that year, according to a new study.
The analysis produced by two Harvard medical researchers estimates that 2,266 US military veterans under the age of 65 died in 2008 because they lacked health coverage and had reduced access to medical care.
That figure is more than 14 times higher than the 155 US troop deaths in Afghanistan in 2008, the study says.
Released as the United States commemorates fallen soldiers on Veterans Day, the study warns that even health care provided by the Veterans Health Administration (VA) leaves many veterans without coverage.
The analysis uses census data to isolate the number of US veterans who lack both private health coverage and care offered by the VA.
"That's a group that's about 1.5 million people," said David Himmelstein, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program who co-authored the study.
Himmelstein and co-author Stephanie Woolhandler, also a Harvard medical professor, overlaid that figure with another study examining the mortality rate associated with lack of health insurance.
"The uninsured have about a 40 percent higher risk of dying each year than otherwise comparable insured individuals," Himmelstein told AFP.
"Putting that all together you get an estimate of almost 2,300 -- 2,266 veterans who die each year from lack of health insurance."
Only some US veterans have access to medical care through the VA and coverage is apportioned on the basis of eight "priority groups."
"They range from things like people who were prisoners of war, who have coverage for life, or who have battle injuries and therefore have coverage for their injuries for life," said Himmelstein.
Veterans who fall below an income threshold that is determined on a county-by-county basis can qualify for care, but many veterans are "working poor" and fall just above the bracket.
"The priority eight group, the lowest priority, are veterans above the very poor group who have no other reason to be eligible and that group is essentially shut out of the VA," according to Himmelstein.
The study comes as the US Senate weighs health care reform legislation and whether to offer government health insurance.
Himmelstein warns that congressional proposals could still leave veterans uncovered and favors a national health care program similar to those in Britain and Canada.

2:06p The weirdness of wishing someone a "happy" veterans day
It always feels a little odd to hear/see people wishing one another a happy veterans day. This marks the armistice at the end of World War 1; at the time it was the most horrifying slaughter the world had seen. Most of an entire generation of European men died in the trenches.
This day is meant to call upon that memory, and that great desire that such a war never happen again. It is to remind us of the sacrifices and the service of men and women who gave their lives or their loved ones, those who were wounded, those who were forever changed by the uniforms they wore. Later it was expanded to include all veterans of all conflicts. Whatever this day is, it is not "happy".
As a child, I would run around Shelburne Falls selling paper poppies for the Veterans of Foreign Wars post that my dad was a member of. I didn't really understand the whole thing, just that poppies were supposed to be a part of it and it had something to do with veterans. I understand it a great deal more now, of course, and much more personally.
This is not a day for happiness, it is a day of solemn memory.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)
I am a veteran dedicated to peace. I wish with all my heart that my country was not involved in the wars it fights today. Yet, for whatever reason, men and women still choose to serve and it can be an honorable choice.
To all those who serve now, who served and sacrificed in the past, who are suffering after their service, and to all those who wait at home, not knowing if their loved ones will return, thank you.

3:59p The Dogs of War
I was searching for something completely unrelated when I stumbled upon a picture of a dog in a jacket covered in Medals from WWI. Curious, I did a quick search online and found a few more pictures of Military dogs from WWI, WWII and earlier. Thinking that this may provide some inspiration for folks with pets I post them here:

12:00p Portable sewing machines?
Has anyone come across a DECENT hand held or portable sewing machine? All the ones I've heard about are crummy and break in a few rounds if they even make it that far. I was looking for one to take to conventions for repair work and whatnot but I can't find one worth getting. Does a decent one exist?
